The Cameleers is an outback action adventure documentary that portraits some of the most celebrated characters in the Australian Outback.
Luke Campbell was a city kid who grew up in a Sydney suburb. But it's a long way from home that he's found his niche in life. It's under an open sky on the back of an animal he's learned to love and respect. Luke is a cameleer, an extreme occupation that requires both great patience and great skill.
We meet the man known as the ‘king of the cameleers’, ‘Willie’ the hooligan camel who’s addicted to Coca Cola, and the woman cameleer who braved scores of Taipan snakes to follow in the footsteps of the early explorers Burke and Wills.
Along the way we witness the changing face of cameleering including the breeding programme on a camel farm run by Neil Waters and his wife Jane. We witness the birth of the infant camel Snow and meet another baby orphan camel that Jane bottle feeds five times a day.
We meet a stranger to the Australian harsh outback, Marijke Van der Tune from Holland, who fell in love with the brown land and a cameleer. They tell their love story.

With Luke Campbell we visit Dennis Orr, an aboriginal cameleer living in the Walkabout community, Rainbow Valley, and they take us on a wild camel catching expedition. Dennis and Luke then demonstrate how to break in freshly caught camels and ride them.
The documentary charts their lives as they head to Alice Springs and the biggest event in their calendar, the annual “Camel Cup” to claim their trophies and fame.
Cameleering in Australia has it's beginnings in the mid 1800's when the animals were first imported along with their Afghani handlers by pastoralists and explorers.
Nowadays close to three quarters of a million wild animals roam freely across central Australia. It’s the only wild camel population on earth, and “The Cameleers” wander with them.
The Cameleers is a story which proves the true spirit of adventure is alive and well in central Australia.
Great viewing for the young …. and the young at heart.
‘The Cameleers’ was cut in 52 minutes as well as 48 minutes duration and is available for broadcast NOW.
